Certification of hydrogen and certificates of origin

Share

Using hydrogen as a fuel can have economic and environmental benefits, but currently more than 95% of hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels in processes that emit large amounts of carbon dioxide. Without proper certification and legislative tools, the energy transformation in Poland will not be as fast and as efficient as possible.

The creation of a low-emission certification system for hydrogen fuel is a step towards decarbonising the European energy market. Using hydrogen as a fuel can have economic and environmental benefits, but currently more than 95% of hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels in processes that emit large amounts of carbon dioxide. Hydrogen is an energy carrier and can be produced and used in the production of electricity and (synthetic) natural gas. Therefore, there is a need to introduce a Hydrogen Certificate of Origin. We need to know by what methods it is produced, what CO2 emissions are associated with, whether it is consumed on site or transported over long distances. The system of certification of origin, production methods, methods of transport and finally the method of using hydrogen is to serve this purpose. This system could be combined with the certification system in other energy sectors. As part of this panel, we will talk with TUV SUD experts and get to know companies that already carry out certification processes, about certificate trading, origin and technology security.
