The first hydrogen housing estate in Poland will be built in Środa Śląska
Polskie Domy Drewniane and SES Hydrogen belonging to the Sescom Group have signed a letter of intent on cooperation in the use of hydrogen technology to power the housing estate in Środa Śląska, where approx. 1.8 thousand flats will be built. This method of heating is not only ecological, but also allows you to reduce energy costs. The European strategy for achieving climate neutrality assumes that by 2050 the share of hydrogen in Europe’s energy mix will increase from the current level below 2% to 13-14%.

“In our activity, we focus not only on developing the market of timber construction. We are constantly looking for new ways to make our investments as modern, ecological, energy-saving as possible, friendly to people and the environment. We also want to involve the best Polish companies in these activities. The development of hydrogen technology in the field of energy supply and home heating, which we want to implement together with Sescom, perfectly fits these goals. In addition to the plans to heat our houses with hydrogen in Środa Śląska, we have also signed a letter of intent to establish the Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley”, says Tomasz Szlązak, President of the Management Board of Polskie Domy Drewniane S.A.
Hydrogen is an element that is freely available and has great potential. Like fossil fuels, it can be a stable source of energy. It has a relatively low combustion temperature and does not produce carbon dioxide or other smog-causing particles. Modern methods of obtaining hydrogen are based on energy derived from renewable sources.
“The development of green hydrogen technologies is essential if we want to achieve the long-term goals of reducing carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Our company has been working on hydrogen technologies for over 10 years, implementing and developing new technical and technological concepts, including those covered by patents. Cooperation with Polskie Domy Drewniane is a very important stage for us on the way to popularise hydrogen in housing construction”, says Sławomir Halbryt, President of the Management Board of SES Hydrogen and Sescom S.A.
Goals for the environment
The housing estate in Środa Śląska will be the first to use hydrogen as energy. The goals, however, extend beyond this investment. PDD was one of the entities that signed a letter of intent regarding the establishment of the Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley. Its aim is to conduct research, investment and implementation works, paying particular attention to the economic and scientific potential of a given region. In addition, the entities involved in this project are to support the development of renewable energy sources. The official signing of the letter of intent took place on September 9 this year at the Economic Forum in Karpacz.
Hydrogen-based energy is also an important part of the European strategy to achieve climate neutrality. It assumes that by 2050 the share of hydrogen in Europe’s energy mix will increase from the current level below 2% to 13-14%.
