SESSION

Opportunities for Baltic Sea States to cooperate
towards an integrated hydrogen market

Poznan, MTP, PCC, Level 2, Hall A

24.04.2024, 13:30-14:20

The Baltic Sea countries are facing unique market opportunities related to the development of the hydrogen economy. The high potential of renewable sources, including offshore wind farms in particular, allows the production of a significant amount of electricity, the value of which can be increased by the possibility to store it and distribute it to consumers at an accessible cost.

Hydrogen allows surplus energy to be stored and redistributed to new markets. The challenge is to initiate large-scale infrastructure projects - an international hydrogen transmission project from Finland, via the Baltic States, to Germany, as well as hydrogen storage projects in salt caverns. Green hydrogen derivatives, such as e-ammonia or e-methanol, provide additional potential for the development of trade cooperation between the Baltic Sea countries.

What new development opportunities arise from the perspective of international cooperation among the Baltic Sea countries in building an integrated hydrogen market? What challenges need to be addressed and what expectations need to be met by politicians in the respective countries?

The parliamentary debate was initiated by the platform of the Baltic Sea Region Hydrogen Council, which brings together actors from the countries of the region. The Baltic Sea Region Hydrogen Council aims to develop the hydrogen economy through international collaboration, dissemination of knowledge and initiation of joint ventures.

Representatives of the countries in the region, invited by the Baltic Sea Region Hydrogen Council, will participate in the debate.
